Fjällräven Re-Kånken Backpack: Eco-Friendly Design Unveiled

No longer the preserve of straight-spined Swedes on the school run, Fjallraven’s Kanken backpack is now a beloved piece of carrying kit the world over. Which, given it’s popularity is perhaps why the environmentally-conscious brand has decided to re-invent this firm favourite in the form of the Re-Kanken.

This relatively new addition to the Fjäll family has been produced using recycled plastic bottles and an energy efficient SpinDye colouring process both of which help to radically reduce each bag’s environmental footprint. What’s also great is that the whole backpack (save for its buttons and zips) have been created using the same material, with the main fabric, lining and straps all made from the same yarn, thus ensuring that a Re-Kånken bag will be a lot easier to recycle in the future.

Though given how long it takes to wear out an incredibly durable Kanken bag it’s handy that the Re-Kånken has retained all the timeless design features of its former guise with the only subtle difference being the Fjällräven badge has been embroidered rather than sewn on. This is a bag that will look after your possessions, your posture and the environment.

The Re-Kanken is available in many colours and also available in a smaller ‘Mini’ version. Take a closer look at the all new Re-Kanken bag at the Fjallraven Store or on our Kanken dedicated sister site My Fox Bag .

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Re-Kånken’s SpinDye process benefit the planet?

The SpinDye process in the Re-Kånken dyes yarn before weaving, slashing water and energy use compared to traditional methods. By integrating colour into recycled polyester from plastic bottles, it cuts chemical waste, making each backpack a greener choice for eco-conscious adventurers.

What sets the Re-Kånken apart from the classic Kånken?

While retaining the Kånken’s iconic shape, the Re-Kånken uses a single recycled polyester yarn throughout, unlike the classic’s Vinylon F fabric. This shift, plus an embroidered logo, prioritises sustainability and future recyclability without sacrificing durability or style.

Why is the Re-Kånken’s mono-material design significant?

The Re-Kånken’s use of one material—recycled polyester—for its body, straps, and lining simplifies recycling. Unlike multi-fabric bags, this unified approach reduces processing complexity, ensuring the backpack can be reborn as new products with minimal environmental fuss.

How practical is the Re-Kånken for daily use?

With a spacious main compartment, front zip pocket, and side slots, the Re-Kånken handles books, gadgets, and water bottles effortlessly. Its adjustable straps and sturdy build support posture, while the Mini version offers a compact option for lighter loads.

What inspired Fjällräven to launch the Re-Kånken?

Fjällräven created the Re-Kånken to blend their Kånken legacy with a push for sustainability. Responding to global demand for greener products, they reimagined the classic using recycled plastics and efficient dyeing, aiming to lessen environmental impact while keeping its practical charm.
