Why Are Fjällräven Kånken Backpacks So Popular?

In the late 1970s, the Fjällräven clothing company noticed that many school children were suffering from back problems when carrying heavy, unwieldy backpacks on their commute to and from school. In 1978, that problem was solved with the trusty Kanken! Its unique and ergonomic style of straps aided children when carrying their heavy books; the word quickly spread, and soon the Kanken became a household name across Sweden.

In 2000, The Sporting Lodge identified this gem of a backpack and, so impressed by its unique design and impressive range of colours, decided this fantastic bag deserved a website of its own – I Love My Kanken was born!

Since then, Fjallraven’s range has grown to provide a Kanken backpack to suit the whole family, ranging from Kanken Kids to the Kanken No. 2 (the posh one!).

Today, the Kånken is more than just a practical schoolbag. It has evolved into a global icon appreciated by commuters, students, travellers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Its clean, boxy design maximises internal space, while lightweight Vinylon F fabric provides excellent water resistance. Available in a range of sizes from the Kånken Mini to the Laptop series, and with limited editions such as Re-Kånken crafted from recycled materials, there is a Kånken to fit every need and lifestyle.

I Love my Kanken’s era is now over but we still have the full range for you to enjoy at The Sporting Lodge.

The Kanken bags are now popular worldwide, and a common sight in any city!

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Fjällräven Kånken backpacks unique?

Kånken backpacks are built for simplicity, functionality and comfort. Designed with straight, padded shoulder straps and a large main compartment, they promote better posture while carrying loads. The lightweight, durable Vinylon F material resists rain and dirt naturally without the need for coatings.

Are Fjällräven Kånken backpacks waterproof?

While Kånken backpacks are not fully waterproof, the Vinylon F fabric is highly water-resistant. It swells when damp, preventing light rain and moisture from seeping through. For heavy downpours, using a rain cover is recommended to keep contents completely dry.

Which Fjällräven Kånken backpack is best for school?

The original Kånken is ideal for school use thanks to its roomy 16-litre capacity, square shape for easy book storage, and reinforced straps. Those needing extra space for laptops may prefer the Kånken Laptop versions, which include padded compartments for added protection.

What sizes are available for Kånken backpacks?

Kånken backpacks come in several sizes: Kånken Mini (7L) for young children or lightweight use, the classic Kånken (16L) for everyday needs, and the Kånken Laptop series available in 13", 15" and 17" options. Special editions like the Re-Kånken also offer sustainable alternatives.

How do I clean my Kånken backpack?

To clean a Kånken, use a soft brush or sponge with lukewarm water. Avoid machine washing or tumble drying, as this can damage the Vinylon F fabric. For tougher stains, spot cleaning is best, followed by air drying away from direct heat sources.
